Dreamy deVOL Kitchen in Foodies' Swedish Hideaway

Dreamy deVOL Kitchen in Foodies' Swedish Hideaway

When I think of my think of what would make up my dream home, one of the first elements that springs to mind is a deVOL kitchen. When I worked in Clerkenwell in London, I would often pop into the deVOL showroom on St. John’s Square for a mosey. Between the timeless aesthetic, the clever efficiency and the cool location, I would walk in and think “Oh yeah, this is my dream home!”. When you know you know!

Unfortunately, it’s looking like the beautifully crafted, solid-timber designs might be built in my imaginary home only, with some of their units retailing at a whopper £18,000 apiece. Sometimes even simple, old-timey designs come with a flashy price tag. As Dolly Parton says, “It costs a lot of money to look this cheap!”. A reference that only kinda fits here, because deVOL- cheap looking? Nah. Rustic, Shaker-inspired, aged-looking? Absolutely.

And nowhere is this style better portrayed than in this Haberdasher’s Kitchen makeover in Skåne, Sweden. This is a kitchen built to work, as it belongs to Laura and Nora who run the swoon-worthy food blog, Our Food Stories. So while looking Pinterest-perfect was a consideration for the creative couple, it also needed to be practical and accommodate a team, prop storage and plenty of workspace. As someone who’s worked on cookery book shoots, I know how much surface space is required. And honestly, this looks like the perfect location set.

Although there’s very little colour in this space, it’s anything but cold. When it comes to designing a pale space, the devil’s in the details. And this kitchen design is a testament to the importance of choosing the right hardware. A combination of oxidised brass handles and library-style cardframe pulls give the kitchen a collected feel.

The tambour door panelling and prep table with glazed drawers are reminiscent of mid-century shop fit-outs, hence the collection name, Haberdashery. The fluted double bowl Carrara marble sink and mottled copper countertop are handsome options for hardwearing kitchen.

Modern appliances juxtapose with original details like exposed beams and woodburning stoves to create a create a harmonious atmosphere. Not too rustic, not too industrial…  As deVOL put it; “The Swedish term ‘lagom’ loosely translates to ‘everything in moderation’ and is often referred to as the Goldilocks term of not too little or too much but just right. What a perfect way to describe this place. It has a bit of stylish Scandi minimalism but also a really eclectic mix of materials, vintage furniture, modern appliances and handcrafted accessories, all brought together with our mid-century inspired Haberdasher’s cupboards. It’s got that ‘can’t quite put your finger on it’ style, it’s just right.”

That description? It sounds… just right.
