Martha Stewart's Most Clever Kitchen Design Ideas
Love her or hate her, Martha Stewart was the original influencer. It’s hard not to see the correlation between all of the present-day interiors, food and housekeeping content that’s overtaking social media and the business empire Martha created decades ago. She didn’t invent housekeeping, but arguably, she did invent making a business out of it. As Ina Garten recently said in The Wall Street Journal, “You know, before Martha, taking care of a house is something you just did, but she made it really valued and appreciated.”
In celebration of Martha’s self-titled documentary on Netflix that was released last week, here’s a look at some of Martha Stewart’s best kitchen moments. From the picture-perfect set kitchen from her TV show, to the farmstead kitchen she had in her iconic Connecticut home, here’s a look at some of her most beautiful yet efficient (read: Martha Stewart) kitchens.
Martha’s TV Set Kitchen
Martha’s TV set kitchen designs have always mirrored her personal kitchens, which made her show feel more personal and homely.
Mixing Old and New
Martha has always married statement antique furniture with contemporary (and no doubt highly efficient!) built-ins beautifully.
Queen of the Coffee Station
Now a mainstay in the TikTok kitchen, Martha’s was the first designated coffee station I ever saw in a residential home.
Embracing Commercial Kitchen Design
Martha’s New York City apartment is a little stark for my personal tastes, but I bet it functions like a dream.
Using Old Timey Kitchen Design
Martha’s collection of antique copperware hanging from a pot rack is nothing short of iconic. It’s a savvy way to store bulky kitchenware while also creating a design statement.
Keeping Like Items Together
By grouping stainless steel, white and wooden utensils together into their own crocks, it keeps everything accessible without looking chaotic.
Martha’s Tea Drawer
This picture sparks within me an inexplicable sense of joy. So organised! So interesting! So aesthetically-pleasing!
Martha’s Turkey Hill Kitchen
The collection of both the baskets and the copperware is a little much… but also kinda adorable?
Utilising Small Spaces
No matter how tight the space, there’s always room for some beautifully-styled open shelving.
Always Having the Essentials on Hand
There’s something so secure and comforting about always keeping small bowls of essentials like eggs, onions, lemons etc. and a store cupboard filled with interesting condiments. Meals, both simple and adventurous, can be whipped up in a jiffy with some mindful stockpiling.
Thank you for all the kitchen wisdom, Martha! I’m sorry you went to jail.
